Awakening the Spirit Art Show opens discussion on mental health
Vernon, BC – North Okanagan residents can celebrate local artists who are using creativity to express their mental health journeys and to ignite community conversations on mental health.
The Canadian Mental Health Association Vernon & District will host the annual Awakening the Spirit Art Show & Sale July 25 to Aug. 20 at the Vernon Community Arts Centre.
“Awakening the Spirit is inspirational as the participating artists focus on recovery, healing, and hope. They are tackling the stigma around mental health head-on and their abilities and contributions to the community are not defined by their health challenges,” said Heather Kwantes, CMHA Vernon’s manager of adult integrated services.
“The goal of Awakening the Spirit is to encourage meaningful conversations around mental illness and wellness. Art can challenge our perceptions of the world around us, and to consider different perspectives. Mental health is often portrayed negatively, when there is a need for positive engagement about resiliency, courage and how we can support each other with compassion and openness.”
Members of the public are invited to attend the Awakening the Spirit Show & Sale.
The Vernon Community Arts Centre is located at 2704 A Highway 6, in Polson Park. The VCAC is open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. From Aug. 5 to 16, hours are Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed Saturday and Sunday.
