AWAKENING THE SPIRIT ART SHOW is BACK!
Join us July 29th, 2022 – August 22nd, 2022

The Canadian Mental Health Association is proud to host the 19th Annual Awakening the Spirit Art Show & Sale, celebrating the creative talents of people living with mental illness.

Art has a therapeutic quality that has proven to benefit the mental health of individuals. Artwork on display is from those living with mental illness who have used art to improve their mental health positively. We hope to break down some of the barriers and stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness through art and creativity.

The Awakening the Spirit Art Show is here to celebrate you- WE ARE LOOKING FOR ARTISTS! First-time or emerging artists who have never presented in a gallery/art show are encouraged to apply.

“People get this idea it is really easy [to make art] when you have a mental illness, but it’s not,” she says. “It’s harder because you have to deal with the struggles you are going through, as well as trying to do a piece.” ~Bernadette Kroft.

“Art makes me a better person. It makes me feel like I can do anything if I put my mind to it.” Artist Betty Kent

Submissions are open to residents of the North Okanagan of all age groups, skills, and experience levels.

  • We can only accept a maximum of 2 pieces per artist.
  • Here is a sample statement:“I was born in 1959 and grew up in the prairies. I took art in high school, but have had no formal training since. My favorite medium is watercolour. I work in an impressionist plein air tradition. My love of nature is reflected in the natural landscapes that I create. I have recently expanded my artistic répertoire to include a more intense exploration of shape, colour and composition on large-format canvas. My art became an important part of my healing process when I began to have struggles with depression and chronic pain a few years ago. My paintings are an expression of my soul that I share with the world.”

CMHA is dedicated to reducing the stigma within our community that affects people who live with mental illness. A local artist created this video to highlight the effort and perseverance of artists featured yearly in this event.
