Kids in Control graphicKids in Control offers free education and support to children and youth, who have a loved one living with a mental illness and/or struggling with substance use. This program is prevention-focused and aims to foster resilience. Children and youth are provided with opportunities to practice healthy coping strategies, provided knowledge about mental illness and connect with peers who have similar experiences. A primary goal of the group is to let the children and youth know that they are not alone in their experience.

Kids in Control also aims to increase knowledge and understanding of mental illness. When there is a clearer understanding of mental illness, children and youth can foster compassion for their parent or sibling. It also provides the necessary language to talk about mental illness, which creates opportunities to articulate needs, access resources and process their experiences. This all helps provide a greater sense of security for children and youth.

We use a variety of activities and games to educate and support each participant. Most importantly, children and youth decide which activities to take part in. This reinforces that they are in control of some things, even if other aspects of their lives are not within their control.
