Lacing up your runners, pulling on a warm coat and going for a walk can make a significant difference for North Okanagan residents experiencing housing insecurity.
On Feb. 28, 2026, Canadian Mental Health Association Vernon & District will once again host the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY). The goal of $40,000 will go towards the North Okanagan Rent Bank which provides housing stability to individuals and families experiencing short-term financial difficulties.
“An unexpected expense, such as vehicle repairs or winter clothes for the kids, can divert money away from rent, meaning homelessness is a very real possibility. Through the rent bank, low to moderate income renters can access an interest free, short-term loan to pay rent or utilities, providing them with much-needed support,” said Julia Payson, CMHA Vernon & District executive director.
“For those walking in CNOY, they aren’t just raising funds for the rent bank. They can’t ignore the winter chill or the tough decisions many people must make about the roof over their head.”
Participants will take part in a two or five-kilometre walk starting and ending at the Vernon Elks Lodge and celebrate their efforts together. All those who raise over $150 ($75 for youth) will also wear iconic CNOY toques as they face the cold night.

Vernon’s 2025 Coldest Night of the Year attracted 179 participants and raised more than $32,792 for the North Okanagan Rent Bank, which covers Grindrod, Enderby, Spallumcheen, Armstrong, Vernon, Coldstream, Lumby and Cherryville.
In 2024-25, the North Okanagan Rent bank benefitted 57 people through 28 loans worth $39,231.
“The cost of housing remains extremely high, and many residents work two jobs just to pay the bills. An unforeseen expense can put the most basic need, housing, at risk. By taking part in Coldest Night of the Year, you are making a difference in the lives of families, seniors and the employed. Join us,” said Payson.
