You are invited to join us September 10th- 27th, 2021
Vernon Community Arts Centre 2704A HWY 6, Vernon, B.C.
Art-whether you choose to create it yourself or observe and enjoy it – it is a relaxing and inspiring activity for many people. However, the particular benefits of artistic expression go much further than relaxation and enjoyment. For artists with lived experience with mental illness to showcase their work is a significant opportunity to educate the public about the lives, creativity, and abilities of individuals in our community who are affected by this often-stigmatized illness.
When people think about mental health, most people think of the term as negative. We want to shine a more positive light on these issues. We want to spark positive conversations around mental health. This art show gives artists a safe way to sort uncomfortable feelings that can manifest themselves in symptoms of anxiety, depression, distress, grief or pain. Making art can be a very personal, expressive, and empowering experience. Art provides an outlet when words fail. We hope this encourages our community to start the conversation about mental health, for those who need support gain the courage to reach out for help.
“To put art out into the world, on display, takes courage. Awakening the Spirit Art Show and Sale is a yearly event hosted by CMHA Vernon, designed to celebrate the creative talents of courageous artists living with mental illness. A local artist created this video to highlight the effort and perseverance of artists featured yearly in this event. CMHA is dedicated to reducing the stigma within our community that affects people who live with mental illness. This show is a place for each artist to sell art and speak to one another proudly and the community about the challenges that are a part of everyday life affecting those living with mental illness. Please take a moment to enjoy this small art film in recognition of the special gift that art can be in any life.”
Join us in celebrating the creative talents of people living with mental illness.
You can view and/or purchase the pieces online; however we strongly encourage you visit in person. You will be amazed by how each artist expresses themselves so originally with delicate details and use of colour.
