Vernon, BC – North Okanagan residents are encouraged to come together to celebrate the community and continue the important discussion about mental health.

On May 9, 2024, Canadian Mental Health Association Vernon & District will hold its annual Block Party at the Polson Park bandshell from 12 to 2 p.m.

“Community and a sense of belonging are essential parts of building up mental health and breaking down stigma. We look forward to welcoming everyone at the Block Party,” said Julia Payson, CMHA Vernon & District executive director.

The Block Party will include numerous booths highlighting CMHA programs and resources from other local organizations. Hamburgers will be available by donation and 6 Shades of Grey will provide great music.

The Block Party coincides with Mental Health Week, which runs rom May 6 to 12.

The theme of Mental Health Week is healing with compassion and kindness.

“We all have the capacity to be compassionate, and each time we chose compassion, we can make a significant difference in the mental health of those around us as well as our own mental health,” said Payson.

“A lot of us are struggling right now. You never know how much impact your words or actions can make for someone who has a heavy heart. Kindness shows us we are seen and we matter. Tell someone at work how much you liked their presentation, email your kid’s teacher to share how much the field trip meant to your child, or simply listen to someone when they are having a bad day. Make space for kindness for yourself too. Treat yourself with compassion and kindness, even when it might be hard.”
